Hello PV world!! We have another important cause to discuss here on the Charity Monday blog today!! May is Celiac Awareness Month so we knew we needed to highlight our Celiac Awareness bracelet! If you’re not aware of what this illness is, it is a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are important for staying healthy. The damage is due to a reaction to eating gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye, and possibly oats.

The organization that we work with is the Celiac Disease Foundation.

Their Mission: Celiac Disease Foundation is a non-profit, public benefit corporation dedicated to providing services and support regarding celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis, through programs of awareness, education, advocacy and research.

Another huge part of the foundation is the diet recommendations they promote. Below are some of the Gluten-Free Diet recommendations they have:

Gluten is the generic name for certain types of proteins contained in the common cereal grains wheat, barley, rye and their derivatives that must be eliminated. The good news is that all fresh fruits, vegetables, beef, chicken, fish, lamb, pork and dairy products are naturally gluten-free

ALLOWED Grains/Flours
Rice, corn (maize), soy, potato, tapioca, beans, garfava, sorghum, quinoa, millet, buckwheat, arrowroot, amaranth, teff, Montina®, flax, and nut flours.

Oats
Research indicates that pure, uncontaminated oats consumed in moderation (up to 1/2 cup dry oats daily) are tolerated by most celiacs. Gluten-free oats are currently available in the United States. Consult your physician or dietician before including oats in your diet and for regular monitoring.

Distilled alcoholic beverages and vinegars are gluten-free. Distilled products do not contain any harmful gluten peptides. Research indicates that the gluten peptide is too large to carry over in the distillation process. This process leaves the resultant liquid gluten-free.

Wines and hard liquor/distilled beverages are gluten-free. Beers, ales, lagers and malt vinegars that are made from gluten-containing grains are not distilled and therefore, are not gluten-free. Gluten-free beers are available in the United States.

Over the weekend I discovered an artist that blew me away with her beautiful sound. She showed up on my sound-cloud stream thanks to my friend that reposted her track. Not only is her voice honest and true, but her voice makes you feel a deep emotional connection and understanding of her lyrics. I feel as though many singers today lack the raw talent and connection to their audience that she does. Her name is Delilah and I’m obviously obsessed.

Paloma Ayana Stoecker (born 23 September 1990), who records under the mononym Delilah, is a British singer-songwriter currently signed to Atlantic Records. In 2011, she collaborated with Chase & Status on the single “Time”. Watch the video below to hear “Time”!

Her first solo song “Go“, was officially released on 25 September 2011, whilst previously being available for digital download. Her debut album From the Roots Up was released on 30 July 2012.

After her parents separated when she was still young, Stoecker moved to North London with her mother where she then grew up. Her mother has English, Cuban and Nigerian heritage, while her father is of French and Spanish descent. Stoecker’s mother had involvement with the MOBOs during the 90s.

Her late step-father was a DJ, who also owned an independent record label named shakedown sounds promoting British bands and a night club showcasing live music. Stoecker began taking singing seriously following the death of her step-father who died in a car crash in 2002. The singer’s first instrument was the piano where she wrote her first song at age 12.

Stoecker attended Portland Place School for secondary school before continuing schooling at City and Islington College, studying Entertainment Law with Music Technology, Theory and Performance. So obviously this girl has gained immense talent for this industry.

Stoecker was signed to Atlantic Records at the age of 17 and upon the three years to her debut release, gathered a large back catalogue of songs. The singer supported British drum & bass/dubstep act Chase & Status during their two year UK tour, ending in 2011. Stoecker featured a support vocalist, performing Time and Heartbeat, by soul singer Nneka. The duo claimed after hearing one of her tracks, they thought the singer sounded “fantastic”. Stoecker co-wrote the track “Time”, along with fellow artists Chase & Status and Plan B, she also provided vocals on the track. The single “Time” was released on 21 April 2011, where it peaked at number 21 on the UK Singles Chart.

Following the success of the tour with Chase & Status, Stoecker later joined Maverick Sabre as his main support act on his 2011 Autumn tour throughout the UK and Ireland. She was also amongst one of the many artists featured on the BBC 1Xtra live tour.

Delilah’s debut studio album, From the Roots Up, was released on 30 July 2012. In the United Kingdom, the album debuted at number five on the UK Albums Chart. The album also debuted in the top twenty of the Scottish Albums Chart peaking at seventeen. The lead single from the album, “Go” was digitally released on 6 September 2011.

The singer released her first mixtape, 2-4am in February 2012 as a free download from her website. The 8 track compilation features unreleased material, including a remix of 2011 single “Love You So”, by Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. Her third single “Breathe” was released on 14 May 2012.

The singer sang with Emeli Sandé at London’s KOKO as part of MTV’s Brand New for 2012. Throughout the spring of 2012, Stoecker enrolled on her first headline tour which began 14 April 2012, in Glasgow’s O2 ABC 2. Stoecker opened a number of tour dates for Grammy Award-winning artist Prince on his 2012 Australian tour in May.

Stoecker cites that her album debut From the Roots Up, is influenced by the contemporary music scene, with genres ranging from dub, dubstep, acoustic and drum & bass. On describing her sound the singer says her music is dark, soulful, melodic pop. Delilah has been described as the missing link between Sade and The XX. She has also been influenced by and compared to Canadian singer Alanis Morissette.

Peggy was a woman with a pure heart who loved all living creatures.

Our Southwest Florida region is characterized by too much animal abandonment, abuse, and irresponsible breeding. Peggy personally supported increased spay/neuter programs, more aggressive adoption campaigns, and the development of a unique sanctuary to care for thousands of adoptable pets. Her dream was to build and operate a care-for-life sanctuary for domestic animals – dogs, cats and bunnies. Peggy passed away in March of 2008 without realizing her dream but left it in the hands of the EARS’ board of directors, staff and volunteers committed to finalizing her dream.”

YO YO YO weekenders! Friday is here and that means it’s fashion Friday here on the blog! Today I’ve got something exciting for all you PV fans! One of our good friends, Vince, over at the brand Jedidiah was recently married. Not only did his wedding look magical and incredibly romantic, but he incorporated Pura Vida into his wedding! DOPE! We were so stoked to receive these amazing shots of the wedding and festivities!

Vince has been a fan of Pura Vida for a little over a year now, so I wanted to know a little more about why he chose to wear our products for his special day. When I asked him why he incorporated Pura Vida into his wedding he said…

I like the quality and look of the product. So when I was thinking of our wedding attire and colors…I did not hesitate to include PV bracelets as part of the accessories for my groomsmen. I wear bracelets everyday and some of my SD-based homies do too.

Every so often we learn about how our fans have been touched by the Pura Vida way of life. Not only do we have amazing fans that spread the word about the Pura Vida cause everyday, but we have fans that start their own philanthropic ventures by incorporating Pura Vida into their lives. Recently, we learned about one particular story that touched all of our hearts here at Pura Vida. The story that I want to tell you today comes from a family in Dayton, Ohio.

A mother that has become a very frequent buyer of Pura Vida showed her son Max about how powerful the action of helping others can be. Here’s their story…

“The idea was Max’s. My 6 year old son’s kindergarten class have been learning how to do good things for others, even small acts performed by small hands. Primary Village North in Centerville focuses on more than just educating our young. They foster the principles of Respect, Responsibility and Citizenship.

One day Max came home and insisted we find some kids who feel sad and give them our Pura Vida Bracelets. He started picking his favorites strings out of the stack unloaded on our dinner table and set them aside.

‘We need to give these to kids that don’t have what we have,’ Max insisted.

And the idea was born. We were going to find kids who sorely needed a dose of happiness, who could use a smile. We would make it HAPPEN.

We reached out to our local children’s hospital, met with them and will be distributing Pura Vida Bracelets once a month to children suffering from serious illnesses here in Dayton. While my two children age 6 and 12 cannot physically pass out the bracelets, a hospital policy prohibits kids under the age of 15 from going floor to floor, they will be collecting donations, selecting & packing bracelets and adding their personal touches.

The first set of 100 bracelets we’re giving away next week will be a donation from my family, my son Max and his PVN kindergarten classmates. A small gesture of caring and citizenship. These kids have inspired me to Make Good Strings Happen.”

This moving venture is called Making Good Strings Happen. We will receive updates consistently from this family so if any of you want to get involved that live near the area- let us know! DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA it’s the one and only L-I-O-N…SNOOP LION!! Yo Pura Vida peeps, I know that may be a little different than the standard D-O-DOUBLE-G line you’re used to, but that’s because I’m here to introduce you to brand new reincarnated reggae artist Snoop Lion. While stumbling across some new tunes I happened to find Snoop Lion’s first single called “La La La”.

Loving the reggae vibes I had to see what was up with this new guy. Having not seen any pictures, just the killer beats he was dropping, I had no idea who he was. Little did I know Snoop Lion’s original birth name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. Woah, exact same name as THE Snoop Dogg we all know and love. I know I caught on a little late, okay..

Snoop Dog has returned as born again Snoop Lion after claiming he was transformed during a religious journey in Jamaica. During this spiritual voyage he was encountered by Rastafarian priests to find some answers that he thought could lead him on a new path. And answers were definitely what Snoop received. In an interview with all new Snoop Lion he tells us, “I didn’t know until I went to the temple, where the High Priest asked me what my name was, and I said, ‘Snoop Dogg.’ And he looked me in my eyes and said, ‘No more. You are the light; you are the lion.’ From that moment on, it’s like I had started to understand why I was there,”

I know a lot of us (including me) are going to miss the old Snoop Doggy Dog and his hardcore rap songs but Snoop isn’t. In the studio Snoop Lion has been said referring to his former self, Snoop Dogg, in third person. He says that he’s over Snoop Dogg and the money making, drug dealing, and violence. Snoop Lion is bringing us some sick reggae tunes that he is beyond content with. He says he’s happy to finally provide his people with music that his “kids and his grandparents can listen to”.

That sounds like a pretty awesome explanation to me! Good for you Snoop! You do you! Plus it’s not like any of us will forget his epic rap songs that hit top charts multiple times in our eras. With 30 million albums sold worldwide… R.I.P Snoop Dogg. You’ll still be on all our iPods where we can remember you when we are in the mood for some old school rap or if we’re sippin on some gin and juice!

Released on April 23rd Reincarted by Snoop Lion has gotten old Snoop and new Snoop fans amped. Especially since he told us that he has always considered himself the reincarnated Bob Marley. I don’t know about you but a little Bob Marley and a little Snoop Dog combo sounds like a pretty dynamic duo! Let’s see what ya got Snoop Lion!

Snoop has been giving us all kind of surprises with this new reggae Jamaican persona. The one and only Miley Cyrus and Snoop Lion came out with the single “Ashtrays and Heartbreaks” singing about romance and, well, smoking. The song is dope. I know you won’t wanna miss out on our all new west coast rapper turned reggae AND no one can say they don’t enjoy a little Hannah Montana here and there. Check it out right hurrrr!

The album also has collaborations with tons of other famous artists! Just to name a few, expect to hear some Drake, Major Lazer, Diplo, and Akon! He’s even got his 14 year old daughter Cori B. featured on “Reincarnated”! She sings the chorus for the song “No Guns Allowed” with the Drizzy Drake. Snoop tells reporters, “Cory B is in the house; she doing her thing. My daughter has reached a peak where she can sing now!” How sweet Snoop! Here’s the official video!
