Big Wave Surfer Joins Team Pura Vida! Meet: Colin Dwyer
Colin Dwyer current O’Neill, Electric, Creatures of Leisure, and Nor Cal Surf Shop Team Rider has officially joined the Pura Vida Bracelets Team!
Coming from a talented family of surfers, Colin started surfing competitively when he was 12 years old, thanks to his gained experience riding big waves with his Dad and cousins. When he was only 15 years old, his Dad took him to the very popular surf spot known as Mavericks, in Northern California, near Half Moon Bay. Mavericks is a winter destination for some of the world’s best big wave surfers. Very few riders become big wave surfers; and of those, only a select few are willing to risk the hazardous conditions at Mavericks. An invitation-only contest is held there every winter, depending on wave conditions. Colin is the youngest surfer in history to be invited to surf at the Mavericks Invitational Event. Colin and his father are the ONLY Father and Son duo to ever surf Mavericks.
More recently, he was brought on as a stunt double for the upcoming movie, Chasing Mavericks, which featured the life of a Mavericks native, Jay Moriarity. The movie features movie stars such as Gerard Butler and Elisabeth Shue.
Born and raised in Pacifica, California, the San Francisco Bay Area, Colin was in the ocean before he could walk. Colin also grew up playing Baseball, his second love, and is a huge Giants fan. Growing up in a family that surfs, it was no doubt he would follow in the same footprints. Having a father who has been a mainstay at Mavericks since the 90′s it was only time until Colin took his turn.
Colins awards and accomplishments include: Two Nominations in the Billabong XXL Monster Paddle Award in 2010, 1st Place Juniors Nor Cal Surf Shop Contest 2009, 1st Place Mens Nor Cal Surf Shop Contest 2009, 1st Place Pro Am Nor Cal Surf Shop Contest 2009, 1st NSSA Open Mens Santa Cruz 2007, 1st NSSA Juniors Morro Bay 2006, 3rd Rip Curl Gromsearch National Final 2005, as well he is a Licensed Emergency Medical Technician and Licensed K38 Jet Ski Rescue Technician.
My daily life consists of attending class at SFSU, going for a surf, hangin’ with friends, and watching sports at dinner with my Family. I love to travel and surfing has taken me to New Zealand, El Salvador, Mexico, Hawaii, Indonesia, and all over the US. Anyone that knows me knows that I love good times with good people and I always have the ocean on my mind.
Favorite Break: Mavericks. Most Surfed Spot: Ocean Beach and Rockaway. Birthplace: San Francisco. Current Residence: Pacifica, California. Birthday: 06/18/1990. Age: 22. Favorite Pura Vida Bracelet: Zebra Braided. Dream Occupation: Paramedic/Firefighter. Personal Goals: Win the Mavericks Invitational, win the XXL Monster Paddle Award, and obtain Bachelors in Psychology from SFSU.
