Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I remember it was around this time last year, when at the Dr.’s for a physical, the nurse found two lumps in my breast. Now, of course I had felt them before, because I often do self breast exams (as one should do) and wondered if they were “normal”, but I tried to ignore any negative thoughts that would cross my mind, until she also found them and confirmed they were not normal lumps. I’m young, in my twenties and my mother had a non-malignant tumor removed from her left breast (same side as my newly discovered lumps) back in the 90′s, so I wasn’t too worried. I’ve heard it’s hereditary, so I was pretty convinced that was probably what was going on. Thank god I was right. It’s always good to get them checked. Even if they are simply Fibroadenomas, which was my case.
So what are Fibroadenomas? According to my doctor, they are actually common in young women (such as myself unfortunately), between ages 15 and 35. They are solid benign tumors. In most cases, fibroadenomas are left alone because they do not increase the risk of breast cancer. Good thing! I will never forget the feeling however of sitting in the waiting room for my ultrasound, thinking the worst. I never really allowed myself to fully invest in the worst case scenario because like I had mentioned, my mother went through the same thing. I have no history of breast cancer in my family and well, I’m young. If fibroadenomas are large or cause discomfort, they can be removed, but again, they do not put you at risk for developing breast cancer. All this information I’m sharing is my story, and not intended for any medical advice. Please visit your own doctor for any questions or concerns you may have.
Unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky. Ladies, it is very important to do breast exams often. Check those breast for lumps! Yes, even if you are young and have no history of breast cancer. Now, let’s not all get worried and paranoid, but instead let’s take the time this month to educate and bring awareness to breast cancer. Let’s stand together and support those fighting this horrible cancer and fundraise in efforts for finding better treatments and a cure.
Pura Vida Bracelets is thrilled to provide a few different choices in fundraising this month. Here are a few options…
